Cigarette smoke contains a high amount of tar that clings to your teeth and lungs. This tar can cause the teeth to look brown and ugly.

Others

Pregnant and lactating women, together with those experiencing sensitivity in their gums, as well as those under the age of 15 need teeth whitening.

Aging people

Aging is a natural process which cannot be stopped or slowed down. It also means that everyone would experience it and it results in staining and dullness over a period of time.

People having fillings

Teeth fillings can also result in yellow teeth and if that teeth is shown while you smile, can definitely cause you to shy away from smiling. This can also be performed on people with certain dental works, who should expect any results because this is a process that varies from one person to the other, which therefore means that the results are not guaranteed. Before any process is performed, it is necessary to visit a dental hygienist who will remove any pigmentation or tar in the oral cavity. This is performed in two stages beginning with the preparation which takes 15 minutes where protection of soft tissues is done by covering them up.

The doctor uses the gel as the first application before employing the plasma lamp that emits ultraviolet light to speed up the process. After sometime, the light is put off and the gels are removed followed by the cleaning. The process is done several times until the correct results are achieved. The role of the gel is to loosen the tooth structure, attracting the pigmentation and the transport to the surface. This process should be done once in a year and under close supervision from the doctor. Immediately after the process, there may be some sensitivity as the enamel attempts to close again. This time, the patient is advised to avoid foods and drinks that contain high amounts of coloring such as blueberries, coffee, red wine, tea and others that may cause discoloration. Taking great care and other hygiene habits prolong the process of teeth whitening as long as possible. Most of these processes last for about three years but less for heavy smokers and people who regularly consume large amounts of foods and drinks that causes discoloration.

This process can also be carried out at home for those who cannot afford such a service from a qualified dental physician. This may however take a long time and can be performed during day time or at night. The patient is supposed to wear some moulds that are filled with gel fixed on the teeth. It is worn for six hours during the night and an hour during the day. This procedure can be effective if handled with professional care.
